EXIF Viewer & Metadata Remover

View and remove hidden EXIF data and metadata from your photos. Check camera settings, GPS location, timestamps, and other sensitive information. Remove metadata for privacy protection with 100% secure browser-based processing.

Getting Started

The EXIF Viewer & Metadata Remover helps you understand what hidden information your photos contain and removes it to protect your privacy. Every photo you take contains metadata - from camera settings to potentially sensitive location data.

Quick Start Guide

  1. Upload an image by dragging it to the drop zone or clicking to browse
  2. View the image preview and file information automatically displayed
  3. Click "View Metadata" to see all hidden EXIF data and camera information
  4. Use "Remove Metadata & Download" to get a clean image without any hidden data

What is EXIF Data?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) data is hidden information automatically embedded in photos by cameras and smartphones. This metadata can reveal more than you might expect.

Types of Metadata Found in Photos

Camera Settings

Camera make/model, lens information, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, flash settings, and white balance used for the shot.

GPS Location

Exact latitude/longitude coordinates where the photo was taken, potentially revealing your home, workplace, or travel locations.

Date & Time

When the photo was taken and sometimes when it was last modified, creating a timeline of your activities.

Device Information

Software version, camera firmware, and sometimes device serial numbers or unique identifiers.

Privacy & Security Features

Complete Privacy Protection

  • 100% Browser Processing: All analysis and metadata removal happens locally in your browser
  • No File Uploads: Your images never leave your device or get stored on any server
  • No Data Collection: We don't track what files you process or what metadata they contain
  • Instant Results: View metadata and download clean images immediately

GPS Location Warnings

When GPS coordinates are detected in your photos, the tool prominently displays a warning. Location data is one of the most sensitive types of metadata, as it can reveal:

  • Your home address from photos taken at home
  • Workplace location from office photos
  • Travel destinations and timing
  • Patterns of movement and behavior

Supported File Formats

The tool supports the most common image formats that contain EXIF metadata:

  • JPEG/JPG: Most common format with comprehensive EXIF support
  • PNG: Limited metadata but can contain timestamps and text data
  • TIFF: Professional format with extensive metadata capabilities
  • WebP: Modern format with EXIF support
  • BMP: Basic format with minimal metadata

Note: RAW camera formats (CR2, NEF, ARW, etc.) are not supported as they require specialized processing.

Understanding the Metadata Display

Organized Sections

Metadata is organized into collapsible sections for easy navigation:

  • Basic Information: File details, creation date, software used
  • Camera Settings: Technical photography data (aperture, shutter, ISO, etc.)
  • GPS Location: Coordinates and location data (highlighted with warning if present)
  • Other Metadata: Additional technical and descriptive information

Export Options

  • Copy All: Copy complete metadata as formatted JSON to clipboard
  • Export JSON: Download metadata as a structured JSON file for analysis

Common Use Cases

Privacy Protection

  • Social Media: Remove location data before posting photos online
  • Online Selling: Clean product photos to avoid revealing location
  • Professional Use: Ensure client photos don't contain sensitive metadata
  • Personal Safety: Remove identifying information from photos shared publicly

Photography Analysis

  • Learning Settings: Analyze camera settings used in great photos
  • Equipment Research: Check what cameras and lenses were used
  • Technical Analysis: Review shooting conditions and parameters
  • Workflow Improvement: Export metadata for batch analysis tools

Forensic & Legal

  • Evidence Analysis: Examine photo metadata for investigations
  • Authenticity Verification: Check if photos have been modified
  • Timeline Construction: Use timestamps to establish chronology

How Metadata Removal Works

Technical Process

When you choose to remove metadata, the tool:

  1. Loads your original image into an HTML5 canvas element
  2. Redraws the image pixel data without any metadata
  3. Exports as a clean JPEG file (95% quality by default)
  4. Provides the clean file for download

What Gets Removed

  • All EXIF camera data
  • GPS coordinates and location information
  • Creation and modification timestamps
  • Camera and software information
  • Any custom metadata fields

File Naming

Clean images are automatically renamed with "_no_metadata" appended to the original filename, making it easy to distinguish processed files.

Best Practices

For Privacy

  • Check before sharing: Always review metadata before posting photos online
  • Location awareness: Be especially careful with photos taken at home or work
  • Batch processing: Set up a workflow to clean all photos before sharing
  • Mobile settings: Consider disabling location services for your camera app

For Photography

  • Learning tool: Use metadata analysis to improve your photography skills
  • Equipment decisions: Analyze metadata from different cameras before purchasing
  • Portfolio preparation: Clean metadata from professional portfolio images

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my photo data completely private?

Yes! All processing happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your photos never get uploaded to any server, and no metadata is collected or stored.

Does removing metadata affect image quality?

The cleaned image is saved at 95% JPEG quality, which provides excellent visual quality while creating a clean file. Some minimal quality loss may occur due to JPEG compression.

Can I remove metadata from multiple photos at once?

Currently, the tool processes one image at a time. For batch processing, you'll need to process each photo individually.

What if my photo doesn't have any metadata?

Some images, especially those that have been processed through social media or other platforms, may already have metadata stripped. The tool will show "No metadata found" in these cases.

Can I selectively remove only certain metadata?

The current version removes all metadata for maximum privacy protection. Selective removal would require more complex processing and isn't currently supported.

Why can't I upload RAW files?

RAW files require specialized libraries and processing that aren't available in web browsers. Convert RAW files to JPEG or TIFF first, then use this tool to clean the metadata.
